This map puts the 2020 Android flagship phone on one screen. The centre is the year; each branch is one part of the phone: the system version, the chip, memory and storage, the screen, the battery, the cameras, the connections and the sensors. An arrow (โ) marks a range, from the lowest figure a flagship shipped with to the highest. The map was compiled through the year, from the January launches to the last flagship of 2020.
One chip for almost every flagship
2020 was the year of the Snapdragon 865 and its 865+ refresh: an 8-core chip on a 7 nm process, with the prime core running at 2.84 GHz, or 3.1 GHz on the plus version. Its Adreno 650 graphics sat next to the Mali-G77 of the Exynos phones.
Memory moved from LPDDR4X to LPDDR5, with 8 GB as the usual starting point and 12 GB or 16 GB on the biggest models. Storage was UFS 3.0 or 3.1, from 128 GB to 512 GB, and a microSD slot still appeared on many phones, taking cards up to 1 TB.
Screens got faster and brighter
Every flagship was OLED by 2020; LCD had left the top tier. Refresh rates moved from 90 Hz to 120 Hz, with 144 Hz on gaming phones, and touch sampling reached 180 Hz and above.
Sizes ran from about 6 inches to 6.9 inches, with FHD+ panels for gaming and QHD+ panels for productivity. Peak brightness climbed from 650 nits towards 1000 nits, and HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision support became common, with Gorilla Glass 6 and the new Victus glass on top.
Cameras, batteries and connections
Main cameras ranged from 48 MP to 108 MP, with apertures from f/1.6 to f/2.2 and video up to 8K at 24 fps. Slow motion reached 960 fps at 720p.
Batteries ran from 4000 mAh to 7000 mAh, with wired charging starting at 18 W and wireless and reverse charging spreading across the line-up. 5G arrived on nearly every flagship, Wi-Fi 6 became standard, Bluetooth moved to 5.1, and the headphone jack survived only on a few phones.
FAQ
Questions about this map
Short answers to what readers ask about it.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 865, refreshed mid-year as the 865+. Samsung's own phones used the Exynos 990 in many regions. Both are 8-core chips built on 7 nm processes.
Did 2020 flagships still have a microSD slot?
Many did. Samsung, Sony and others kept the slot, taking cards up to 1 TB. The map shows external storage as a branch of its own for that reason.
What does the arrow (โ) mean on the map?
A range. The figure before the arrow is the lowest a 2020 flagship shipped with, the figure after it the highest. Values separated by a bar (|) are alternatives found across the year's phones.
How was the map compiled?
From the specification sheets of the flagships released during 2020, gathered from January to the last launch of the year, then grouped by component.
